Mangos are great

But I used to avoid buying them whole because they seemed to messy to eat. Until I learned a better way:

First, you stand the mango on one end and cut slabs off the wide sides. What you're doing, basically, is cutting so that the knife blade runs parallel to the flattish pit on the inside, as closely as you can without hacking into the pit itself.

Once you've cut off two "side slabs" (for lack of a better term) you can lay the mango down and "trim" around the pit.

Eating the trimmings is easy, as the flesh-to-skin ratio is high, and you can just bite into them.

For the slabs, what you'll want to do in order to minimize mess is to have them juicy side up on a cutting board. With the knife, gently make crosshatched cuts on the surface, without cutting the skin.

Then you can flex the newly cubed mango slab and eat the insides with minimal cleanup afterward.
