One of the things I value most about my (almost six) years of living in New York is that I've had a wide variety of jobs in many different parts of the city.
I'm currently working as a waitress in Midtown Manhattan, and I've journeyed to and from work at all hours of the day and night. I love that my schedule changes from week to week, so I get to see the city, sidewalks, and people in a different light each time.
Looking at snapshots I've taken, I was surprised at how lonely and empty such a bustling neighborhood can appear. Inclement winter weather does add a nice touch ;)
Crossing Eighth Avenue after one of our many snowfalls this winter. Just to the right of the traffic light is a curved building: Madison Square Garden. In the background there is a half black/half white side of a building where workers on a suspended platform are hand-painting a new advertisement. You can also see a bike lane on the left. These bike lanes are pissing a lot of people off, and it's in the news a lot lately.
This is one of those times when the "sidewalk closed" sign really meant CLOSED. You can see MSG in the background behind the cloud. This is literally right next to a bank, a Starbucks, a deli, and Penn Station. There were tons of people walking just behind where I was standing when I took this. All the workers and passers-by were so nonchalant about the huge hole, backhoe, and hissing steam.
In many New York neighborhoods there are a lot of old churches among the newer buildings. I love the juxtaposition, and the fact that you can't see them unless you are walking on that very block.
This was taken on a rainy, shitty day. I got to work too early and didn't feel like going in yet, so I walked around the neighborhood for a while. I absolutely adore the ornate elevated passageway between buildings! This is also a typical "concrete corridor" view of the city.
Taken during one of our recent huge snowstorms, late at night. I had my boots and parka and didn't mind the walk or the weather. It was nice to have so much space and quiet for once! Most pedestrians and drivers simply went away, and the orange streetlights made all the snow glow.
Another snowy scene, walking down Seventh Avenue that same night. I could have taken a million pictures on my way home; everything looked amazing!

Great pics especially the one of the church, it looks really close to the building behind it!
