Read This Before Getting Embalmed

Just finished reading this wonderful book--it's the first time I've come across Gerry Spence and I really enjoyed his shoot-from-the-hip, unapologetic, intelligent and enthusiastic writing!

Seven Simple Steps to Personal Freedom: An Owner's Manual for Life

My favorite quote from the book:

"How could one lay one's head down upon the embalming bed without having explored every niche and alcove, every attic and basement, for the bonanza that is hidden in the self?"

I love the word bonanza! And how perfectly he described the process (and the necessity) of unearthing, through living, all the random, weird, wonderful things that lie in wait inside us.

I think this is why blogging (and all writing) is so addictive: you discover things about yourself and how you experience the world that you wouldn't have found if you hadn't taken the time to put your feelings into written words.

Which reminds me of another wonderful quote recently shared by Joy Frequencies on Twitter:

"Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self." - Cyril Connolly

I want to get that one tattooed on the backs of my hands! Though probably I'll just write it on the space around my laptop screen with a Sharpie.

So I love the quote (really) but am compelled to observe the irony of someone who becomes famous enough to be quoted essentially eschewing the public who makes him known enough to be quotable. Seems like the kind of guy I would want to smack in the mouth. But I'm in that kind of mood. :-)

I was thinking strongly of giving up my blog since I am finding it more and more difficult to come up with something worth saying and in veiw of the fact that my readership is building ever so slowly, til I read your quote by Cyril Connelly. Thanks for the kick in the butt.
